PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah men's golf team finished the first day of competition in 18th place at the 2005 Ping Cougar Classic. The Utes finished the day with a two-round score of 583 (+7). The final round will tee of Saturday at the 72-par Riverside Golf Course, the round will start at 8 a.m. local time.
Pacing the Utes, senior Ashdon Woods finished the day tied for 23rd overall with a score of 141 (-3). Woods shot a two-under par 70 in the first round, while capping off the day with a score of 71 (-1).
Steve Newren and freshman Dustin Pimm sit tied for 58th, shooting a score of 146 (+2) for the first two rounds. Newren tallied a one-over par 73 in both rounds, while Pimm shot a two-under 70 in the first round before slipping in the second round, notching a four-over par 76.
Senior Jake Sowby finished the first day of competition tied for 92nd. Sowby scored a 79 (+7) in the first round and a 74 (+2) in the second round to tally an overall score of 153 (+9). Freshman Chris Gresh sits one stroke behind Sowby with a 10-over par 154. Gresh shot a 81 (+9) in the first round and a one-over par 73 in the second round.
