Ute Gymnasts Compete For NCAA Individual Titles Tonight

AUBURN, Ala. -
The University of Utah gymnastics team will be represented on every apparatus in tonight's NCAA Championships individual event finals. Freshman Ashley Postell has qualified to compete on three events, but a deep heel bruise suffered in pre-meet warm-ups on Friday could keep her out of the beam lineup. She says that she is less affected by the injury on her other two events--vault and bars. Competing on vault and floor is senior Annabeth Eberle. Sophomore Rachel Tidd, who had the top score on bars in both days of team competition, will join Postell in the bar lineup. Senior Gritt Hofmann has qualified for event finals for the first time of her career and will perform on floor.

There will be two flights on every event but beam, which has eight competitors in one session. Postell and Eberle are both in the second flight on vault, which has 12 total competitors. Postell is the first competitor on beam--considered the worst position because scores typically rise as the lineup progresses. Postell is the sixth and final competitor in the first flight on bars and Tidd is fourth of eight in the second bar flight. Eberle drew a tough spot on the floor, following favorites Kristen Maloney (UCLA), Ashley Miles (Alabama) and Courtney Bumpers (North Carolina) in the first flight. Maloney and Miles both received 10.0's on floor Friday and Bumpers is the defending NCAA floor champ. Hofmann leads off the second flight on floor.
All four Ute event qualifiers are first-team All-Americans on their respective events and Postell and Eberle won first-team honors in the all-around as well. Several Utes won second-team All-America honors: Tidd in the all-around, Eberle on beam, Postell on floor and Nicolle Ford on bars.
Eberle finishes her career as an eight-time All-American. Six of those were first team honors. Postell is already a five-time All-American (four first-team awards) and Ford has won four All-American awards in her two years (two first team). Hofmann is a first-time All-American.
