SALT LAKE CITY - The Mountain West Conference preseason coaches/media poll predicts a heated battle among the top-three teams in the conference in 2005. The poll tabbed the University of Utah volleyball team to finish second in the Mountain West Conference.
Utah received 106 votes and three first-place nods, just behind Brigham Young. The preseason favorites, the Cougars got 108 votes, seven of them were for first place. Colorado State is just behind the Utes, picked third with 96 votes and three first-place ballots.
UNLV (74 votes), TCU (62), San Diego State (44), Wyoming (42), New Mexico (37) and Air Force (16) round out the rest of the conference.
Two players landed on the Preseason All-MWC team. Two-time all-conference honoree and outside hitter Shelly Sommerfeldt was a preseason pick while fellow Ute Connie Dangerfield was tabbed the all-conference team libero.
The Utes return nine letterwinners from last season's conference championship team. They went 24-7 en route to a 13-1 league mark and made their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The 2005 regular season begins on Friday, August 26, when Utah hosts Idaho State at Crimson Court. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
