LAYTON, Utah - The University of Utah men's golf team finished the first day of competition in fourth place at the Purple and Red Invitational. Utah finished the first round with a score of 297 (+9), before improving in the second round to finish with a score of 284 (-4). The final round of competition will take place Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005.
Sophomore Dustin Pimm leads the pack of 84 players with a two-round score of 138 (-6). Pimm shot a 2-under 70 in the morning round, before finishing the day with a 4-under 68 in the second round. Pimm holds a one stroke lead over Eric Lillibridge of Santa Clara and Nick Wilkins of UC-Riverside.
Fellow sophomore Chris Gresh finished the day tied for 18th with a score of 146 (+2). Gresh shot 75 (+3) in the first round, before finishing the day with a second-score of 71 (-1). Senior Steve Newren sits one stroke behind Gresh with a score of 147 (+3). Newren is currently tied for 24th place after shooting a 74 (+2) in the first round, followed by a 73 (+1) in the second round.
Freshman Mike Branca finished the first day of competition with a score of 150 (+6) tied for 38th. Branca struggled in the first round, shooting a 6-over 78, but improved in the second round with an even-par 72. Sophomore Nick Carter struggled in both rounds of competition. Carter shot a 79 (+7) in the first round, before improving by two strokes in the second round (77) to finish with an overall score of 156 (+12).
Competing individually from Utah, freshman Chancellor Cota finished the day tied for 55th with a score of 153 (+9). Cota shot a 78 (+6) in his first round of collegiate play, before shooting a 75 (+3) in the second round. Senior Nick Micek completed the first day tied for 63rd with a score of 155 (+11), while sophomore Chace Bickmore finished in 83rd place with 18-over par 162.
