SALT LAKE CITY - Seniors Jonathan Larsen and Sterling Richards each won two individual events on Saturday to help the Ute men defeat TCU 129-114. The men improve to 3-1 overall, 1-1 MWC. The women also beat TCU by a score of 129-114, winning eight of 13 events, to improve to 5-1 overall, 4-0 MWC.
"TCU gave us everything we could handle," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "It was a great meet and it will be really fun to see how things turn out at the conference meet. Our senior men continued to do what they have done for us the last four years, especially Jonathan Larsen and Sterling Richards, and we're happy to send them off with a win."
Larsen took top honors in the 50 free with a time of 20.93 seconds and the 100 free with a time of 45.41 seconds. Maasberg finished second in both events with times of 21.95 (50 free) and 48.21 (100 free). Junior Matthew Bailey finished third in the 50 free with a time of 21.98 seconds. Larsen also helped the Utes claim first place in the 400 free relay along with Andrew Cole, David Johnson and Maasberg.
Richards swept both diving events, posting 360.14 points in the 1-meter event, 25.04 points ahead of second place. Richards tallied 380.83 points in the 3-meter event to outdistance himself from second place by 44.08 points. Damien Brown place third in the 1-meter (315 points) and Andrew Jones finished third in the 3-meter (300 points).
In the 400 medley relay, Utah's team of Johnson, Michel DeCarolis, Andrew Brown and George Evans finished second with a time of 3 minutes, 34.45 seconds. Evans took top honors in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 44.82 seconds, while Cole finished third with a time of 1 minute, 46.80 seconds. In the 200 IM, DeCarolis finished in 2 minutes, 00.14 seconds to place second.
Jeremy Clark finished second in the 1000 free and 500 free, with times of 9:50.33 and 4:41.83, respectively. Fellow Ute Adam Oliver finished third in both events with times of 9:51.85 and 4:45.36, respectively. Senior Eric Jorgensen placed fourth in both events with times of 10:30.95 and 4:54.51, respectively.
For the women, Kelsey Patterson won both diving events after tallying 294.30 points in the 1-meter and 327.90 points in the 3-meter. Freshman Anna Braszkewiecz finished third in both events after posting 257.70 points in the 1-meter and 267.90 in the 3-meter event.
In the 400 medley relay, Utah's `A' team of Shannon McQueen, Amber Walter, Jennifer Fredsall and Alison McInturff took top honors with a time of 3 minutes, 56.04 seconds. Utah's `B' team of Marissa Martin, Ariane Kich, Meghan Demchuk and Leah Jensen finished second with a time of 4 minutes, 02.21 seconds.
Rachael Curci won the 1000 free with a time of 10 minutes, 34.46 seconds. Curci also won the 500 free in 5 minutes, 09.01 seconds. In the 200 free, McInturff took top honors with a time of 1 minute, 53.24 seconds. McInturff placed second in the 100 free with a time of 52.87 seconds, followed by Amy Barefield's third-place time of 54.27 seconds.
Walter finished first in the 50 free in 23.75 seconds, while Barefield place third with a time of 24.54 seconds, while Martin won the 200 back with a time of 2 minutes, 06.04 seconds.
The women return to action next Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host Colorado State at Ute Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
