SALT LAKE CITY -
The 2007 Utah gymnastics team will start the season ranked exactly where it finished at last April's NCAA Championships--in second place. Utah received 758 total points and seven first-place votes in the 2007 Gymnastics Preseason Coaches Poll, released Dec. 1. Georgia was picked to defend its national title with 793 total points and 28 first-place votes. No team other than Utah and Georgia received first place votes.
Utah returns six letterwinners and three All-Americans from its 2006 NCAA runner-up squad, including sophomore Kristina Baskett, the NCAA co-champion on the uneven bars last year, and junior Ashley Postell, a 10-time All-American and last year's NCAA all-around runner-up. The roster also includes seven freshmen.
Utah opens its season on Jan. 12 against UCLA in Salt Lake City. The Utes will host the NCAA Championships on April 26-28.
