SALT LAKE CITY - Ricky Johns, who will be a senior with the Utah men's basketball team this fall, helped lead the Jamaican National Team win the CBC Championship, played June 13-17 in Kingston, Jamaica.
Johns, a 6-3, 190-pound guard, was Jamaica's third-leading scoring in the tournament. He averaged 9.6 points per game while shooting 60 percent from the field and making 8-of-17 three-pointers. Johns also had nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Jamaica recorded its first-ever win over Cuba in the semifinals, 94-83. Johns scored a tournament-best 15 points and connected on 4-of-5 three-point attempts. Johns then had 12 points while making 2-of-3 threes and four rebounds in a 76-59 title game rout against the Virgin Islands.
Jamaica went 4-1 in the CBC Championship and will play in the Centrobasket Tournament, July 4-8 in Panama. The Virgin Islands, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have also qualified.
Johns was born in Jamaica and lived there until the age of five. He joined the Utes last season after transferring from Monroe College in New York, where he was a second team NJCAA All-American. Johns played in 26 games with one start, averaging 14.2 minutes per contest in 2005-06. He averaged 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds per game.
