Utah Golf Opens at Miranda Invitational

THIS WEEK:
The Utah golf team will kick off the 2006-2007 campaign this weekend at the Gene Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. The lineup for this week will feature juniors Dustin Pimm, Nicholas Larson, Steven Broker, Chris Gresh and Nick Carter.
Last year the Utes enjoyed a strong finish at this tournament, placing 6th in a field of 17 schools. "We're excited," says Coach Randall McCracken. "We're definitely ready to go out and start competing."
THE FIELD:
Nineteen teams will compete in this year's invitational, including in-state rivals Southern Utah, Utah State and Utah Valley State.
LOOKING BACK ON LAST YEAR:
Utah enjoyed six top-10 finishes in the regular season, and finished seventh at the Mountain West Conference Championships in 2005-2006. The team was led in the championships by Dustin Pimm, who finished tied for sixth.
UTE NOTES:
The Utes return four players from last season, including outstanding junior Dustin Pimm, who led the Mountain West Conference in stroke average last year. Pimm also enjoyed six top 10 finishes last year, including a win at the Purple and Red Invitational. Pimm was recently included in Golf Digest's Top 50 Male Players to Watch for the 2006-2007 season. Fellow junior Steve Gresh also returns, more experienced after having played in every tournament a year ago. Utah also landed junior college All-American Steve Broker from Dixie State, as well as Nick Larson, a standout transfer from Montana State-Billings. These juniors should provide experience and leadership to an otherwise young team featuring three freshmen and no seniors. Coach Randall McCracken is entering his third season at the helm of the team, and feels that things are beginning to come together for the program. Coach McCracken notes that this year's team is a close-knit, talented group that could go far if everyone performs up to their potential. The team hopes that accomplishing individual goals as well as promoting hard work, respect and support will help them go far this season.

"They really want to come together as a team," says Coach McCracken of his group of players. "They're 100-percent committed to each other, they're going to push each other. This whole team has been great so far, they're really bonding."
