THIS WEEK
The University of Utah Cross Country team will compete at the Mountain West Conference Championships this Saturday, Oct. 27. The championship, originally scheduled to take place in San Diego this Saturday, will be run in Albuquerque, N.M. Due to the overwhelming impact of wildfires in Southern California; the MWC office sought an alternate venue for the cross country championships.
The race will be held on the UNM North Golf Course. The men's 8k race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 6k race which will begin at 11 a.m.
KEPLER'S QUOTES
"The change hasn't affected us," says head coach Kyle Kepler. "We're excited to be back in New Mexico where we have had great success this year. The athletes are ready for the opportunity and the challenge that comes with the championships.
"Our goal for this weekend is to finish in the top three. To do that we will have to run the best race of the year, be aggressive, and keep a tight pack throughout the race."
UTE NOTES
The teams competing in the MWC Championships are Air Force, Colorado State, Brigham Young, University of New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV, and the Wyoming.
Last year Utah finished sixth with a total of 156 points. Alyssa Abbott led the team, placing 22nd with a time of 22:48.2.
Utah has run five meets this year, and freshman Lauren Lewis has been the teams' top runner each time out.
While Lewis has been the top runner, sophomores Alyssa Abbott and Rebecca Mackelprang have been the No. 2 runners all season long.
San Diego will now play host to the MWC Championship in 2008, replacing New Mexico which was scheduled to host it next year.
This is the third 6K race of the year for Utah. The NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship meets will also be 6K runs.
The NCAA Regional meet in two weeks will be held in Ogden, Utah. It will mark the third time Utah has run in-state. It will also be the Utes' last race in the state of Utah this season.
