ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of Utah cross country team took fifth at the 6K Mountain West Conference cross country championships, here this afternoon. Alyssa Abbott led the team in taking 20th place in 22:37.
Utah netted 130 team points.
"We finished fifth," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We were fighting illness all week and it effected us. We had four athletes that were sick, and two of them tried to race but they had to drop out.
"I think Alyssa, Chelsea and Lauren had great individual races and those three really kept us in it. Our spread, one-through-four, was 15 seconds. But, we didn't run hard enough and it wasn't meant to be. It wasn't our day. I have to give credit to Wyoming and New Mexico. We knew we had to battle them for the third- and fourth-place spots, and they ran hard.
"We obviously need to take better care of ourselves heading into the championship week. That's something we need to address when we get home, and we need to make sure that it doesn't happen again next year."
Also scoring behind Abbott were teammates Lauren Endersen (24th in a time of 22:50), Chelsea DiGrazia (25th, 22:50), Lauren Lewis (26th, 22:52) and Kellie Anderson (35th, 23:47). Alexis Davis was 40th in 24:02.
Colorado State won the team title on 33 points, followed by Brigham Young (39 points), New Mexico (94), Wyoming (118), Utah, Air Force Academy (160), UNLV (204), TCU (224) and San Diego State (229).
The individual title went to April Thomas of CSU. She clocked the 6K course in 21:20.
