THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah Cross Country team will compete in the NCAA Mountain Regional meet this weekend, hosted by Weber State University. The meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Ogden, Utah, with the women's 6k race set to start at 12:15 p.m., at the Riverside Golf Course.
HEAD COACH Kyle Kepler's QUOTES:
"We had a great couple weeks of prep, and the athletes are in good spirits about the meet," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We have set lofty goals for this weekend, such as finishing in the top-ten.
"We need to keep our packs tight if we want to do well this weekend. It will be up to the athletes to go out and be competitive. We are not guaranteed another meet this season, so there is no reason for us to hold anything back."
UTE NOTES:
The top two teams and the top-four runners not on the qualifying teams will make it to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19. There are nine regional sections in Division I Cross Country.
Among the top 15 teams ranked in the Mountain Region, there are four conference champions (Colorado State, Colorado, Northern Arizona and Southern Utah), and another five in the national rankings (No. 11 CSU, No. 13 Colorado, No. 17 Brigham Young, No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 22 Northern Arizona).
Among the teams participating in the NCAA Regional meet with the Utes are Colorado State, Colorado, Brigham Young, Northern Arizona, Texas Tech, Weber State, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Utah State, Southern Utah, Wyoming, Montana State, and UTEP.
The NCAA Championship selection show will be on NCAAsports.com on Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.
Even though the Utes are youthful, they are experienced. Six of the 10 athletes on this year's team ran in the 2006 NCAA Mountain Regional meet in Albuquerque, N.M.
Last year the Utes finished 11th at the NCAA Regional meet with 301 points. Alyssa Abbott paced the team as she finished 46th in 22:35.9.
UP NEXT:
Should the Utes qualify for the NCAA Championships, it will be run in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19. The race will take place at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
