Runnin' Utes Host Aggies Wednesday Night
The University of Utah men's basketball team remains at home Wednesday, when the Runnin' Utes host the Utah State Aggies at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Tipoff is slated for 8:05 p.m. MST and the game will be televised on The Mtn.
Utah comes into Wednesday's rivalry game with a 4-2 record, coming off a 78-66, come-from-behind win over UC Irvine. The Anteaters hit 7-of-8 3-pointers to open the second half and open a 13-point lead. But Utah outscored UC Irvine 35-10 over the final 11 minutes to pick up the victory.
Utah State is 5-4 after picking up a 71-65 win over Santa Clara Saturday in Logan. The Aggies got 25 points from leading scorer Jaycee Carroll in the victory over the Broncos. The win gave USU two consecutive victories for the first time this season, including a 75-62 win over Iowa on Nov. 24.
Utah leads the series with the Aggies 128-91. The home team has won in each of the last five meetings.
Runnin' Ute Fast Breaks
? Four Utah players are averaging double-digit points per game, while two more average 6.2 or more.
? Through six games last season, Utah was allowing opponents to shoot .491 from the field. So far this season, the Utes are holding opponents to a field-goal percentage of .418.
? Utah held South Carolina Upstate and Weber State to 52 points earlier this season. The Runnin' Utes did not hold a single 2006-07 opponent to less than 55 points.
? Utah is 225-108 all-time versus current members of the Western Athletic Conferece. The Utes have played eight of the nine Big West teams in the past and have winning records against all eight of them.
? The Utes currently rank No. 1 in the MWC in field-goal percentage, converting at a .532 clip.
? Utah is the top team in the MWC in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 27.3 boards per game.
? Utah-Utah State is the second-most-played series in Ute annals. Utah has faced the Aggies 219 times. The Runnin' Utes have only played BYU more often (244).
Ute Sharpshooters
Utah is the top shooting team in the Mountain West Conference. The Runnin' Utes have made more than half their field-goal attempts in five of their first six games. Utah is converting at a .532 clip, which is tops in the league. That number was buoyed by a .556 (30-of-54) performance Saturday.
Only one other team (New Mexico, .500) is at or above 50 percent. The Utes are also tied for the top 3-point shooting team in the MWC. Utah has hit 45-of-105 from behind the arc, for a percentage of .429.
Borha's Big Day
Junior guard Lawrence Borha is in the starting lineup for his defensive ability against the opponents' best scoring guard. Through seven games (including two exhibitions), Borha's main defensive responsibilities have struggled. They have combined to shoot 19-for-59 (.322) from the field. Borha has also showed some offensive firepower. In the season-opener, he scored a career-high 20 points. He topped that with a career-high 24 points (on 9-of-10 shooting) against UC Irvine. He also had career-best assist (8) and rebound totals (8) vs. the Anteaters.
Fab Frosh
Freshman forward/guard Carlon Brown has started the last two games in place of the injured Stephen Weigh. Brown has taken to the starting role nicely. He scored just two points against Weber State Wednesday. But the two were on a monster dunk that came as part of Utah's 20-2 run after falling behind 16-4. In Saturday's game against UC Irvine, Brown hit 6-of-10 shots, including another highlight-reel dunk from the baseline. His 12 points were a season- and career-high and he also grabbed three offensive boards.
Nevill's Notes
Junior center Luke Nevill ranked ninth in the nation in field-goal percentage last season, shooting .637. The 7-foot 1-inch Aussie isn't quite that hot in the early going this season. He has hit 50 percent or better from the field in five of six games. But his shooting percentage is .485 and still feeling the effects of going 2-for-10 against Santa Clara. The Preseason All-MWC selection has still managed to reach double-figure scoring in each game this season. He's got two double-doubles as well, both coming in Seattle during the NIT Season Tip-Off.
