OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving opened up the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships on Wednesday. The Ute women sit third after day one with 86 points, while the men are in fifth with 84 points.
The opening day for the Utes saw female diver Kelsey Patterson win the three-meter diving title for the second time. Patterson won with a score of 322.60, for her second title in the event in three years. The 800 free relay team for the Ute women placed second with a time of 7: 26.15. Alison McInturff swam her leg in 1:48.56 which is an NCAAB provisional qualifying time. The women's 200 medley relay team placed fourth with a time of 1:43.61. "It was a solid day for the women," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "Kelsey did a great job and was head and shoulders above the competition. We didn't do quite as well as we'd hoped in the relays, but tomorrow is a chance for us to show what we can really do. There are three strong individual events and one relay for us to swim."
On the men's side, Andrew Jones placed second in the one-meter diving with a score of 310.55, while teammate Damien Brown finished fourth with his score of 293.30. The men's 200 medley relay and 800 free relay finished fifth and sixth respectively. "We had a solid first day on the men's front," adds Litzinger. "Tomorrow is a chance for us to rebound and be better."
Day two of the MWC Championships will be on Thursday, Feb. 22. Live results will be posted on the MWC official site or by following the link below:
