BEAUMONT, Calif. - Dustin Pimm got off to a fast start at the Braveheart Classic, recording a opening round of 75 to tie with four other golfers for first place at three-over-par. The Sandy, Utah native will look to capture his second title of the season Tuesday, despite continuing to recover from injuries sustained last fall.
"Dustin played pretty well and helped keep us in contention today," coach Randall McCracken said. "We had an interesting day with the wild weather, but we started playing better in the afternoon. Hopefully that can continue tomorrow."
Trailing Pimm was teammate Chance Cota, who continued his solid play of late, carding an opening-round score of 79 to tie for 22nd. Junior Steven Broker sits tied for 32nd place, after an opening round of 80.
As a team, the Utes fired a 314 in the opening round to tie for fourth place, trailing first-place UCLA by six strokes.
Golfers battled brutal conditions Monday including wind gusts upwards of 35 miles-per-hour. Though two rounds were originally scheduled for Monday, the second round will be completed Tuesday morning, due to darkness. The tournament's third and final round will follow.
