THIS WEEK The University of Utah Cross Country team will compete against Brigham Young University, Baylor University, and Utah Valley University at the BYU Autumn Classic Sat. September 8, at 10a.m. in Provo, Utah.
LAST WEEK The Utes were third out of five teams with a score of 64 points at their season opener at Utah State last Friday. The Utes were led by freshman Lauren Lewis who placed fourth in the 5k race with a time of 17:50.2.
Other outstanding Utes were Becky Mackelprang (7th, 18.03.3), Stephanie Skoreyko (14th, 18:25.3), Janett Ern (16th, 18:31.0) and Kellie Anderson (23rd, 18:47.1). Lauren Endersen (19:18.0), and Alexis Davis (20:00.9) also ran for the Utes, finishing 31st and 35th, respectively.
UTE NOTES The women will race on a 5k course at the East Bay Golf Course located near I-15 on the south end of University Avenue, in Provo, Utah just off the University Ave. exit. Entrance to the Autumn Classic is $3 for adults, $2 for students with ID, and children 5 and under is free.
In each of head coach Kyle Kepler's three years, a freshman has paced the Utes in the teams' first race of the season. Chelsea DiGrazia was the top runner as a freshman in 2005, Rebecca Mackelprang led the team as a rookie in 2006, and newcomer Lauren Lewis was the top Ute at last week's season-opener.
KEPLER'S QUOTES "This week we're looking for improvement, particularly in the last 100m of the race," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Last week, our top-five runners were within 60 seconds of each other and we hope to get that gap even smaller as the year progresses."
"The course this week is a fairly fast course so it will allow the athletes to run a faster race. To do well, we will need to set the pace early and maintain good form throughout the entire race."
NEXT WEEK The Utes will travel to Bozeman, Mont., for the Montana State Invitational on Saturday Septtember15.
