SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's track and field team begins its indoor season at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12. The meet will be held at the BYU Smith Field House on the campus of Brigham Young University. Action begins on Friday with the shot put, 20-lb weight throw and the long jump, with the remainder of the events beginning at noon on Saturday.
Ute Notes: Several returning athletes set Utah records in indoor competition last year and showed improvement in the outdoor season. Junior Chelsea Shapard, who was a regional qualifier in outdoor, holds school records in the 200 and 400 meters. Sophomore Alyssa Abbott, who led Utah in the fall cross country season, was also a regional qualifier in the outdoor season. Sophomore Whitney Wellington set the school record in the 60-meter dash last season.
Coach Kepler's Two Cents: "Everyone is excited to get started with our first meet of the season this weekend at BYU. The goal with everyone is to just get them into competition. Results are always critical, but of more importance this weekend will be getting a feel for competing again and staying healthy.
"I'm very happy with the work our team did over the holiday break. It has been very obvious in our first few practices that they continued to train hard and maintain the shape they were in prior to leaving for the break. Hopefully this will translate into some good performances this weekend."
Looking Ahead: The Utes continue in-state next weekend, Jan. 18, with the Utah State Open.
