Utes prepare for rare home meet

THIS WEEK:
The Utes will travel to nearby Park City, Utah as they host the Utah Invitational. The meet will be the lone home event of the season for the team. The men's and women's slalom and GS races will be held at Park City Mountain Resort from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on Jan. 11-12.
The men's and women's Nordic events will be held at Soldier Hollow Jan. 11-12. Friday will feature: Classic, Interval Start, 9:00 a.m. (Men 20 KM); 10:30am. (Women 15 KM). Saturday will feature: Freestyle, Mass Start, 9:00 a.m. (Women 5 KM); 9:30 a.m. (Men 10 KM).
LAST WEEK:
The University of Utah opened official competition at the CU Invitational in Steamboat Springs, Colo. The Utes occupy fourth in a field of nine schools with 242 points after the alpine competition. Host Colorado leads the invitational with 278 points, which concludes Jan. 19-20.
Newcomers Thomas Zumbrunn and Eva Huckova were the top Utah finishers in the GS and slalom races. Huckova got things started on Saturday, posting a sixth-place finish in the GS. Zumbrunn followed his teammate Sunday, racing to a second-place finish in the slalom. Chirine Njeim finished sixth in the slalom, while teammate Mikaela Grassl finished eighth. Kyle Kung cruised to an eighth-place GS finish.
TRAVELIN' UTES:
In Houghton, Michigan, the Utah Nordic team finished 6th in the national College Cup at the US National Championships. Coaches indicated they were happy with the results as they continue to build toward the end of the season. Only half of the team was represented, as the foreign athletes chose to go home over the holidays.
In Ontario, Zoe Roy, a freshman Canadian skier, raced well against her country's best skiers. In Maine, alpine skiers Tague Thorson and Scott Veenis both scored their best points races of their respective careers. The Nordic squad said they were excited to get back together this week and start the college season at Soldier Hollow this weekend.
SUPER SLETTEN:
Utah sophomore Even Sletten is leading the prestigious SuperTour sprint list and occupies fifth place on the distance list despite skipping US Nationals last week and opting to go home to Norway to train for the holidays. "Its great for Even to get this recognition. He has been working hard this past year and is fired up to compete in the NCAA season," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said.
QUOTING DIRECTOR OF SKIING Eli Brown:
"We have some quality training and racing at home in the next time period so our consistency will improve soon. This weekend confirmed our goals of moving up the podium in March. We have our work cut out for us, but are ready to fight hard for the title."
