SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's cross country team earned a fifth-place ranking in the NCAA Mountain Region this week after taking third-place at the Mountain West Conference Championships on Nov. 1 in San Diego, Calif.
This mark ties the highest ranking the Utes have reached in the school's history, and the best team ranking the cross country team has seen under head coach Kyle Kepler since he took the position in 2005. The last time the women's cross country was ranked fifth was back in 1996 when the team was under the direction of Mike Jones.
"This is another nice step forward for our program. It's always nice to be recognized for all of the hard work and effort that everyone puts in throughout the year," said Kepler. "This group has been focused and believed in each other all year. Hopefully, we can continue to run at a high level and finish one of the best women's cross country seasons in Utah history on a high note at Regionals and NCAA's."
The Utes' showing in the MWC Championships last weekend was a phenomenal step for the program. The Utes ran a solid race and only netted 77 points, with Colorado State coming in fourth-place overall with 121 points. The Rams were the previous MWC Champions (2007).
