SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah catcher Jesse Shriner has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, helping the baseball team rattle of five straight wins.
Shriner, a Littleton, Colo., native, went 12-for-23 (.522) from the plate with three home runs, 10 RBI and eight runs scored as Utah went 5-0 on the week, including a four-game sweep over Air Force. He also led the Utes with a 1.043 slugging percentage on the week, while turning in a .577 on-base percentage. He started the week going 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored in Utah's 22-3 win over Southern Utah. In the first game of the Air Force series, Shriner went 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored in a 5-2 Ute victory. On Saturday, he went a combined 4-for-8 from the plate, while tallying four RBI and two runs scored in Utah's doubleheader sweep of the Falcons. In the series finale, Shriner went 2-for-5 with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored in Utah's 12-4 victory.
San Diego State hurler Stephen Strasburg was named the Pitcher of the Week.
Shriner and his Utah teammates return to the diamond tomorrow to host Southern Utah. First pitch at Ute Field is set for 3 p.m. Utah will return to Franklin Covey Field this Thursday for a three-game set against BYU.
