LOGAN, UTAH - The University of Utah women's cross country team placed third in the Utah State Open on Saturday at the American West Heritage Center. Chelsea DiGrazia, a senior and native to Elko, Nev., placed first overall with a 17:57.2 finish in the 5K race.
"Chelsea [Digrazia] ran a very smooth race and out-kicked the others in the end," said head coach Kyle Kepler.
Seniors Lauren Enderson, Janett Ern, and Kellie Anderson also ran well on Saturday, placing in the top 15. Enderson placed 12th with an 18:30.2 finish, Ern finished 13th at 18:36.7, and placing 14th on Saturday was Anderson with a time of 18:45.7. Also racing on Saturday were Samantha Gaffney (17th, 18:54.9), Rachel Perkins (18th, 19:23.2), and Sydney Osmun (19th, 19:29.3).
Utah State placed first overall with 32 points and top 5 times totaling 1:30:47.9. Weber State came in second with 38 points and a top 5 total of 1:31:18.0. The Utes earned 57 points in their season opener with top 5 times totaling 1:32:44.7.
"We ran well early on and in the end of the race, but we didn't push hard enough in the middle," said Kepler. "I think training over the next couple of weeks will fix that though. I am focused on how we ran the race and we will work on the things we need to."
