SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 54-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (12-6, 0-0) begins conference play at home beginning Thursday, April 2 when they face No. 65-ranked UNLV (12-8, 1-1). The Utes will continue with matches against BYU (12-8, 0-0) and No. 50-ranked TCU (6-9, 0-0) Friday and Saturday, respectively.
"We are looking forward to a great weekend of tennis," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We are hosting three incredibly strong teams. Our conference has improved tremendously from last year and it will be a tough battle to defend our title. All three matches will be toughly contested and I hope we will get some good crowds to help us beat some of these teams."
Last year the Utes had, 4-3, victories over all three of this weekend's opponents.
In UNLV's last action, the Rebels were topped by New Mexico, 5-2, after sweeping Air Force, 7-0, to begin conference play. Eliot Wronski and Luca Barlocchi of UNLV are currently ranked No. 79 in doubles.
BYU is coming off of three wins this weekend against Eastern Washington, 6-1, and sweeps over Loyola Marymount and Montana State. They are set to play TCU on Thursday before going against Utah on Friday.
The last action for TCU was on March 17 when they downed Columbia, 7-0. TCU has three currently ranked singles players No. 62 Slah Mbarek, No. 76 Kriegler Brink, and No. 110 Emanu Brighiu, and two doubles teams, No. 20 Adrian Simon and Emanu Brighiu, and No. 31 Kriegler Brink and Slah Mbarek. The Horned Frogs will face BYU and UNLV before they see the Utes on Saturday.
If weather permits the Utes will play their first home match outdoors on Thursday. Utah is 8-0 indoors on their home courts. Timmy Allin is on a five game winning streak at the No. 6 position and a eight game winning streak in the No. 5 and 6 position and is (13-5) on the season. Doubles partners Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers have an eight game winning streak at the No. 1 spot and are (10-1) on the season.
All matches are scheduled to take place outdoors at Liberty Park beginning at 1 p.m. pending weather conditions. If temperatures drop below 50 degrees or if it is raining the matches will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
