SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's golf team heads to Tucson, Ariz. for the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championships. The tournament is being held at the par-71, 7,136 yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Club Thursday through Saturday. Each day will begin at 7 a.m. and consist of 18 holes. The field for the 2009 MWC Championship includes No. 19 TCU, No. 21 Colorado State, No. 23 UNLV, No. 24 San Diego State, No. 37 New Mexico, No. 65 Brigham Young, No. 160 Air Force, No. 189 Utah and No. 195 Wyoming.
Utah currently sits in eighth place in the MWC team standings with an individual stroke average of 76.72, a team stroke average of 306.90, and a low round of 275 at the Kauai Invitational giving them their best finish of fifth place.
The Utes had a total of four top 10 finishes: ninth at the William H. Tucker Invitational Sept 26-27, fifth at the Kauai Invitational Nov. 3-5, 10th at the San Diego State Barona Cup March 16-17, and seventh at the BYU Cougar Classic April 24-25.
On the individual leader board senior Chance Cota ranks the highest for the Utes at 22nd with sophomore Chase Hite the next Ute in line at 37th. Sophomore Derek Adams sits in 43rd, freshman Kaleb Mahanes 44th, freshman Joe Webber 50th, sophomore Jeff Kitches 52nd, and sophomore Mike Branca 57th.
Mahanes gave the Utes their lowest round of the season shooting a score of 66 during the second round of the Kauai Invite. Cota has the second lowest round of 67 and holds the lowest top place finish tying for fourth place at the Kauai Invite.
Dustin Morris of Colorado State leads the MWC individual leader board with a low round of 66 and an average of 71.03. UNLV sits in first place on the team leader board with an individual stroke average of 71.89, a team stroke average of 287.57, and a low round of 276 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitiational.
Last year at the MWC Tournament the Utes finished in fifth place at 14-over-par. Cota was the only player from this year's team to compete in the tournament last year. He had a 21st-place finish at six-over-par with a score of 219 (71, 73, 75). Colorado State took the team title with a first place finish at two-under-par.
Last week the Utes competed in the 2009 PING Cougar Classic where they took a seventh-place finish. They had a combined three round total of 872 (291-286-295). Hite lead the Utah with a 13th-place finish, shooting a score of 213 (71, 71, 71) at three-under-par.
