SALT LAKE CITY--Utah All-America gymnast Kristina Baskett has been named a first-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American. Baskett, who won second-team honors as a junior in 2008, becomes the 15th first-team Academic All-American in school history and the second this year--joining Ute kicker/punter Louie Sakoda. It marks the fourth time a Ute gymnast has won first-team Academic All-America honors. Previous gymnastics honorees were Shannon Bowles and Theresa Kulikowski in 2002 and Kulikowski in 2003.
Baskett carried a 3.69 cumulative GPA in communication (electronic journalism emphasis) during her Ute career from 2006-09. She led Utah to three NCAA runner-up finishes and one third-place team finish, winning 12 All-America citations and medaling seven times. Her individual medals included the 2006 NCAA uneven bars championship, two silver medals (2008 vault, 2009 all-around) and four NCAA bronze medals (2008 all-around, 2009 vault, 2009 bars, 2009 beam).
A five-time NCAA regional champion, Baskett won 88 event titles in her career to rank fourth all-time at Utah, and led the 2009 Utes with 35 victories. Utah's MVP as a senior in 2009, she was the team's academic award winner (Dahl Award) her first three years.
Baskett, who hopes for a career as a professional photographer, was one of 12 winners in an NCAA-sponsored student-athlete artist project and her photographs were displayed in the Gaylord National in the Washington, D.C., during the 2009 NCAA Convention in January. She was also featured in the NCAA publication Champions.
