COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Seventy-seven University of Utah student-athletes have received the 2008-09 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete award, the league's highest academic honor, the conference office announced Wednesday. The MWC also released its Spring Academic All-Conference team this week, which included 88 Utes.
To be eligible for the MWC Scholar-Athlete Award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
To earn academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor. Sports included in the spring semester awards are baseball, basketball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field.
Utah's 88 Academic All-Conference honorees were part of a new MWC record-setting group of 772 individuals from all member institutions to be recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom.
