Five Utah gymnasts were recognized as Mountain West Conference Scholar Athletes, led by ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American Kristina Baskett. Joining Baskett in receiving the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference were Daria Bijak (an ESPN/CoSIDA second-team academic all-district selection), Jamie Deetscreek, Stephanie McAllister and Beth Rizzo.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
All but Rizzo, who was injured, were starters in Utah's NCAA Championships' lineup. The Utes placed third at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Baskett, Bijak and Deetscreek won All-America honors at the championships, while McAllister performed well as the team's leadoff on the uneven bars.
In other academic news, the Ute gymnasts finished the 2008-09 year with a 3.423 team GPA. Five Utes were named to the Dean's List, which requires a 3.5-or-better GPA. They were Bijak, Deetscreek, Jacquelyn Johnson, Gael Mackie and Stephanie McAllister. Ten Utes made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for spring semester: Baskett, Cortni Beers, Bijak, Deetscreek, Annie DiLuzio, Johnson, Mackie, McAllister, Rizzo and Kyndal Robarts.
