USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team came together to defeat Air Force, 169-113. The Ute men fall to the Falcons in a close and competitive battle, 157-143.
"Our women's effort today was fantastic," said Utah Head Coach Greg Winslow. "It is exactly what we needed after our loss to Wyoming and we're looking forward to competing against Arkansas next week."
Sophomore Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.) helped lead the Ute women to a victory by finishing first in all three of her individual events against the Falcons. Edge secured first-place times in the 50 and 1000 free with times of 24.43 and 11:16.77 respectively and clocked 1:09.30 in the 100 breast.
Junior Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah) also had a fantastic night, locking in first-place times in all three of her events. Edge defeated the Falcons in the 200 free and 200 breast with times of 1:54.27 and 2:29.60 respectively and anchored the 200 medley relay to finish with 1:50.48.
Other members of the 200 medley included senior Beth Gunderson (Portland, Ore.), junior Maiya Otsuka (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Ashley Andreason (Fountain Valley, Calif.).
The Ute women were also successful in sweeping the Falcons in the 500 free and finished strong off the platforms. Junior Kwan "Queenie" Ling Yu (Yuen Long, Hong Kong) took first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 294.53 and second in the 3-meter with 237.53. Freshman Ellis Walters (Indianapolis, Ind.) switched positions with Yu in both events scoring 287.70 in the 1-meter and 256.35 in the 3-meter.
The Utah men fought to the finish, but fell short to Air Force in the last event, securing a second-place position in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:25.08. The relay team included freshmen Bjorn Gunnarsson (Norrkoping, Sweden), Andy Lamb (Raleigh, N.C.), Karson Applin (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Eric Murray (Woodstock Ga.).
"Tonight was the third close loss our men have had this season," said Winslow. "I think that we will be ready for the [Mountain West Conference] championship at the end of the season though."
Freshman Bryan Michaels (Shoreline, Wash.) secured first-place positions in both of his individual events, clocking in times of 4:40.87 and 9:49.4 in the 500 and 1000 free.
Senior John Baque (Olympia, Wash.) also displayed a great amount of effort in the pool, placing first in the 100 and 200 breast with times of 57.98 and 2:07.07 respectively.
On the boards, freshman Nelson Foo (Hong Kong) defeated the Falcons in the 3-meter dive, securing a first-place score of 343.88.
Next week, the Utes head to Arkansas to take on no. 19 ranked Razorbacks. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. CT.
