GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - For the past two days, the University of Utah men's swimming and diving team competed against Mesa State, Adams State, and Air Force at the Mesa State Invitational Shoot-Out in the El Pomar Natatorium.
Although Air Force beat Utah by a score of 223 to 148, Utah earned two victories against Mesa State (302 to 68) and Adams State (300 to 27).
"I was very impressed with our team's character as they fought their way through this meet," Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. "The meet this morning was even better than yesterday. Our men set five new pool records today. I'm very proud of them."
The El Pomar Natatorium pool records the Utes broke today include the 100 back win by Major Robinson (53.04), the 200 breast win by Garrett Peterson (2:09.02), the 100 free win by Brent Murray (46.88), and the 100 fly win by Karson Applin (51.48). Murray alongside Bjorn Gunnarsson, Andy Lamb, and Garret Beaman also set a new pool record in their winning 200 free relay (1:26.25). Last night, that same group set a pool record in the 400 free relay (3:08.00).
Another notable Ute performance was the 200 medley relay, where Robinson, Lamb, Gunnarsson, and Corey Williams all helped in claiming the second spot (1:15.89).
The runners-up spots in the 50 free, 50 breast, and 100 breast were held by Murray and Peterson. Murray's time for the 50 free was 21.47, while Peterson's times in the 50 and 100 breast were 27.38 and 59.16, respectively. Applin also took the runner-up spot in the 50 fly (23.30) before his pool-record breaking win in the 100 fly.
As for the Ute divers, they swept the competition away last night with Nelson Foo placing first overall in the 1-meter (466.15 points) and 3-meter (458.95) dives. Brandon Stoppelmoor placed second in the 1-meter (441.05) and 3-meter (457.30) dives, and Caleb Herrick placed fourth in the 1-meter (419.30) and 3-meter (420) dives.
"Our team is really starting to grow and develop together," Winslow said. "That's exactly what we want this early in the season."
Next up, the Ute women will face off against Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., on Oct. 15. Then on Oct. 29, Utah will host Denver University.
