LONG BEACH, Calif. & TUCSON, Ariz.-- The University of Utah swimming team finished competing in the Arena Invitational in Long Beach, while the Utah divers wrapped up the Wildcat Diving Invitational in Tucson over the weekend.
Utah men placed 10th overall with 267.50 points at the Arena Invitational, while the Utah women earned 13th place overall scoring 231 points.
"Overall, I was impressed with how we did," said head coach Greg Winslow. "This meet gave us a lot of useful information on what we need to work on to prepare for the conference in February. Like how to recover and how to stay focused over the course of a few days. I'm proud of how our team handled it."
During the last day of the Arena Invitational, Ute men placed in finals heats of five of the seven events, including the 1650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, and 200 fly.
Major Robinson and Brent Murray placed 13th and 17th in the 200 back with respective times of 1:51.70 and 1:51.15.
Garrett Peterson had a 14th-place finish in the 200 breast (2:05.98). Corey Willams, Tim Leonhart, and Andy Choi held the 23rd, 25th, and 28th spots, respectively (2:10.40, 2:12.76, and 2:14.24). Bjorn Gunnarsson placed 21st in the 100 free (46.48), while Eric Murray placed 30th (47.28).
Other final heat placements for the men include Austin Fiascone in 27th in the 200 back (1:58.32), the 21st-place finish by Luke Donohue in the 200 fly (1:54.77) and another 21st-place finish by Rick Mason in the 1650 free (16:33.10).
The Utah women swam their way into the finals of five of seven events, including the 400 free relay, the 200 breast, the 100 free, the 200 back, and the 1650 free.
Natalie Edge, Hannah Caron, Kristina Evans, and Traycie Swartz polished off the 10th-place spot in the 400 free relay (3:26.04). Edge also placed 14th in the 100 free (51.09). Maiya Otsuka placed 26th in the 200 breast finals as well (2:19.68). Another high point for the Ute women was when Jana Willsey swam a season-best time in the 200 fly when she placed 36th in the preliminary round (2:05.77).
The scores from the University of Utah and San Diego State during the Arena Invitational will be tallied against each other for their dual meet early this week.
At the Wildcat Diving Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., about 20 different university squads competed against Utah including powerhouses like Stanford, USC, and Arizona.
"We had the opportunity to compete against some of the best divers in the country," said diving coach Richard Marschner, "This meet gave us some needed experience as we continue to learn new dives to get ready for conference and zones at the end of the year."
Kwan Ling Yu scored 216.30 points in the platform dive, earning the runner-up spot out of 40 divers.
In the preliminary rounds, Brandon Stoppelmoor placed 25th in the 1-meter dive (222.35) and 26th in the 3-meter dive (245). Ellis Walters earned 22nd place in the 1-meter (227.15) and 25th in the 3-meter dive (234.10) in the preliminaries as well.
Next up for the Utes are home meets against Seattle University on Friday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. and against Arkansas on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m. Both will take place at Ute Natatorium.
