SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah-Utah State gymnastics meet took on an air of a well-attended scrimmage, as the banged-up Aggies were shorthanded on three of the four events. A crowd of 12,951 watched the No. 4 Utes win by a whopping 196.225-178.250 margin. It was the lowest score by a Utah opponent since 1994, when San Jose State scored a 176.175.
Utah co-head coach Greg Marsden called Utah's performance a "mixed bag" after the meet, noting there were some great performances by several gymnasts, punctuated by unusual mistakes by others.
Epitomizing that characterization was Daria Bijak, who over-rotated on her bar routine and then fell off the beam, only to bounce back and finish with a career-tying 9.95 on floor.
"We did some nice things," said Marsden, "And then we made some perplexing errors. It's hard to get upset at Daria because she upgraded her bar routine and then tried to do what we had concentrated on all week in practice--which was hit her final handstand. She over-rotated, but she was aggressive, which we want."
Jamie Deetscreek, who picked up three individual wins, scored a 39.20 to win an all-around contest that no one seemed to want. Along with Bijak, Stephanie McAllister ran into trouble on bars, while Kyndal Robarts had an off night on beam and stepped out of bounds on floor.
Only Annie DiLuzio, who went for a 9.875 on vault, 9.825 on beam and a 9.95 on floor made it through the meet without a glitch. In fact, had DiLuzio's exhibition bar routine (9.65) been to count, she would have won the all-around with a 39.30.
Ute winners were Deetscreek in the all-around, bars (tied with Beers) and beam (tied with DiLuzio), Robarts on vault and DiLuzio and Bijak on floor
Utah jumped out to a 49.125-48.475 lead in the first rotation against the only full lineup the Aggies would put up all night. Robarts won her fifth straight vault title, scoring a 9.90. Before her, DiLuzio scored a 9.875 and Bijak tied her season high with a 9.85.
On bars, the Utes started fast, fizzled in the middle and finished strong. Robarts (9.875) and Beers (9.90) scored career highs, and Jacquelyn Johnson (9.80) hit a season high for a fast start. But Stephanie McAllister (9.425) got tangled up in the bars as the fourth competitor and Bijak (9.525) over-rotated and lost control near the end of an upgraded routine. Deetscreek's 9.90 at the anchor helped Utah to a 48.975 set. Utah State, with just four gymnasts on vault--one performing a timer--scored a 46.200. After two, Utah led 98.100-94.675.
On beam, which has been Utah's most consistent event, the Utes scored a 48.975--their lowest on the apparatus since the season-opener at UCLA. DiLuzio (9.825), Deetscreek (9.825) and McAllister (9.80) turned in the best efforts. Even with the below-average showing, Utah's lead ballooned to 146.975-131.925 when two of USU's four competitors on floor fell.
The Utes finally put it all together on the floor, where Beth Rizzo led off with a 9.80 in her first floor routine since the 2008 NCAA Super Six. McAllister (9.85), Bijak (9.95) and DiLuzio (9.95) propelled Utah to a meet-high 49.250.
