PROVO, Utah -
The Utah gymnastics team narrowly avoided its first loss in over a decade to instate rival Brigham Young, defeating the Cougars 195.925-194.375. Two falls on the balance beam erased a big Utah lead on the final event, and not until the Cougars helped out with two falls of their own on floor, did the Utes escape with a win.
With two of its first three gymnasts falling off the beam, the Utes began to operate "scared," according to co-head coach Greg Marsden. Only Jamie Deetscreek, who walked through a 9.925 routine, seemed comfortable on the suddenly shaky event.
"It's frustrating because we hadn't counted a fall for the first half of the season and now we have in the last two weeks," said Marsden. Utah also counted a fall on the balance beam in last week's loss at Michigan--another meet where it held the lead going into the final rotation.
Other than the "obvious errors" on the beam, Marsden was pleased with his team's effort, especially since injuries caused some shakeups in the lineup. "I thought we did a lot better job on three events than last week, even with some new people in the lineup. In fact, Meg Whitney and Jacquelyn Johnson may be pushing some others for lineup spots," added Marsden.
Whitney, a freshman competing for the first time of her college career, scored a 9.80 on vault and a 9.625 on floor. Johnson scored a 9.75 on bars and a career-high 9.80 on floor.
Kyndal Robarts scored a 39.375 to win the all-around and also collected her seventh vault title of the season--tying for first with Annie DiLuzio (9.90). DiLuzio was also a double-winner, capturing floor with a 9.90, while Daria Bijak won bars with a 9.90.
Utah led from the outset, but the momentum shifted on the final event, when McAllister led off beam with a fall and DiLuzio suffered her first fall of the season one competitor later. BYU's third competitor on floor fell right after DiLuzio's routine, but not until another Cougar fall from the No. 5 spot, did the pro-Utah crowd in BYU's Marriott Center breathe easily.
Utah jumped out to a 49.000-48.975 lead in the first rotation, with Bijak's season-tying 9.90 leading the way on the bars. Recovering from rough nights last week in Michigan were Deetscreek (9.75), McAllister (9.80) and Cortni Beers (9.775). Utah's 49.000 was its best bar score in four meets, since its 49.150 at Washington back on Jan. 29.
Utah's best vault set in three weeks received a 49.250 and the Utes picked up some tenths on the Cougars, 98.300-97.700. Whitney led off with a 9.80 in her college debut, and Stephanie McAllister, who initially was pulled from the lineup due to an ankle injury suffered at Michigan, followed with a 9.85. The biggest scores came at the end, where DiLuzio and Robarts put together back-to-back 9.90's to tie for first. It was Robarts' seventh-straight vault victory.
A decent floor set with two substitutes (Whitney and Johnson) came next. DiLuzio got Utah over the 49.000 mark with a 9.90 routine at the end and Utah took a hefty one-point lead (147.425-146.400) into the final rotation.
