TUCSON - The University of Utah men's golf team sits in eighth place with a score of 305 after the first round of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships Thursday on the par 71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Resort. The Utes are just one stroke behind Air Force for seventh place.
Junior Derek Adams shot a one-over-par 72 to lead Utah during the opening day of competition. The Lake Havasu, Ariz., native stands in a 12th-place tie with five other players after the first round.
Junior Mike Branca was the next-highest Ute in the standings, finishing four strokes over par with a 75 to tie for 23rd on the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Joe Webber ended the day with a 78 at seven-over-par to tie for 36th place. Fellow sophomore Kaleb Mahanes followed with an 80 to finish in a 41st-place tie in the individual standings. Senior Chase Hite was 12 shots over par with an 83 to take 45th after the first 18 holes of play.
Colorado State is in first place on the team leaderboard with a total score of 283, one stroke under par. The Rams' Zahkai Brown and Ryan Peterson are tied with BYU's Esteban Calisto and UNLV's Derek Ernst atop the individual leaderboard with an opening-round 70 at one-under-par.
The second round of the MWC Championships will be played tomorrow, starting at 7 a.m. PT.
