TUCSON - The University of Utah men's golf team posted its lowest team score of the tournament (302) but could not improve on its ninth-place standing to finish the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships Saturday on the par 71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Resort. The Utes finished 18 strokes behind eighth-place Wyoming with a score of 911 (305-304-302).
Junior Derek Adams led the Utes with his second 72 of the event and throughout the tournament by shooting a 221 (72-77-72). Adams tied for 26th with New Mexico's Nick Geyer and Andrew Hoops of Air Force. The Lake Havasu, Ariz., native finished eight shots over par during the three rounds of competition.
Junior Mike Branca and sophomore Joe Webber tied for 35th in the individual standings, finishing 16 strokes over par with a 229 total. Branca shot a final-round 75 (75-77-77) while Webber shot a 76 on the final day.
Chase Hite finished with a 235 (83-75-77) to finish 44th and Kaleb Mahanes shot his lowest round of the tournament with a 78 and took 45th with a total of 239 (80-81-78).
Sophomore Kaleb Mahanes followed with an 81 today and now has a total scored of 161 (80-81) to rank 45th in the individual standings.
Colorado State captured its second MWC championship in three years with a 13-stroke victory (834) over UNLV (847) after posting a score of 7-under-par 277 during the final round. The Rams' team total of 18-under-par 834 is a new 54-hole MWC Championship record for lowest team score by 10 strokes. CSU's Ryan Peterson captured medalist honors with an 8-under-par 205.
