COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sixty-five Utah student-athletes have been selected as Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year, the league announced this week. Additionally, Utah placed 80 student-athletes on the Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference team for the spring semester.
The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
Track and cross country freshman Jenny McCune and women's soccer sophomore Kellie Woodfield led the way with cumulative 4.0 GPA's, while 23 student-athletes logged a 3.8 or better. The ski team led the Utes with 14 MWC Scholar-Athletes.
To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MWC team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
The track and field team led Utah with 20 Academic all-MWC awards, followed by women's swimming and diving (12), baseball (seven), men's basketball (seven), men's swimming and diving (seven), softball (six), men's tennis (six), women's tennis (six), women's basketball (five) and men's golf (four).
