CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Former Utah director of athletics Jim Copeland died on Friday at his home in Charlottesville at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. Copeland served as Utah's director of athletics from 1985-87 before leaving for a job at his alma mater, Virginia.
Copeland, a former three-year starter for the Cavaliers' football team, was the school's director of athletics from 1987-94. He also held the same position at William & Mary and SMU.
During his two years in Salt Lake City, the Utes captured three NCAA titles--two in skiing and one in gymnastics--and 11 conference titles.
Copeland was born in Charlottesville, where a funeral is planned for Tuesday.
