LOGAN, Utah- The University of Utah women's cross country team started its season Saturday at the Utah State Open. The team finished third overall with 83 points, led by sophomore Jenny McCune's ninth-place finish. BYU was the leader of the team standings at the meet with 23 overall points.
"I feel good with how we did. To beat Utah State on their home turf was a good accomplishment," said head coach Kyle Kepler.
McCune finished the five-kilometer race with a time of 17:36.4, improving on her time at the same meet from last year by 20 seconds. Behind McCune was fellow sophomore Nikki Dotter, who finished 19th with a time of 17:49.7.
Rounding out the top five finishers for the Utes were three freshmen. AuraLea Fain finished 33rd with a time of 18:09.2, Alexis Laws finished 34th with a time of 18:13.1, and Rebekah Winterton finished 35th with a time of 18:13.6.
Sophomore Chantel Hunt finished 66th with a time of 20:11.3 and junior Brooke Casagranda placed 69th with a time of 21:22.0.
Competing as unattached athletes, Alexis Davis finished 60th with a time of 19:40.9. Hilary Troutner followed with a time of 20:09.2 to take 65th place.
"I was pleased overall with our effort," said Kepler. "Our freshmen were a bit timid at first, but this gave them a chance to compete at the college level. They figured out what they will have to give and next time they will be more aggressive."
