TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Utah women's swimming team competed in a tri-meet against Arizona State and Oregon State at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Saturday. The Utes overcame Oregon State by a score of 165 - 97 but fell to Arizona State by a score of 165 - 96.
"I'm really impressed with our girls today especially after two weeks of training down here," said head coach Greg Winslow. "I am proud of how they responded to the tough training and swam some really solid races."
Hannah Caron won the 100 fly (55.26) where Sarah Boylen rounded out the top three (57.61). Boylen posted season-best times in both the 100 fly (57.61) and 200 fly (2:07.10). Caron placed second in the 200 fly as well (2:02.33).
The runner-up Ute team for the 200 medley relay consisted of Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, Hannah Caron and Natalie Edge (1:43.98). Swartz touched in second place in the 100 back (57.07) while Zuch finished second in the 500 free where she posted a season-best time (5:00.98). Edge placed second in the 50 free, only .03 of a second behind ASU's Kathryn Haron (23.72). She also placed second in the 100 free (51.50).
Other notable Ute performances include the second-place finish in the 200 breast by Maiya Otsuka, which was also a season-best time for the senior (2:20.45). ). Jana Willsey also posted one of her season-best times in the 200 fly where she placed fifth (2:04.87). Kayla Buck also had a strong third-place finish in the 1000 free (10:55.41). Edge, Zuch, Evans, and Swartz rallied together for a win in the 200 free relay to end the meet (1:34.21).
"Judging by today, I think we are going to fit in really well the Pac-12 conference next season," Winslow said. "We're looking forward to a good spring semester as we finish with the Mountain West."
Next, the Utes will head to Fort Worth, Texas to battle it out with TCU on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m. CT.
