Even with 11 freshmen and sophomores on its 2012 roster, the Utah gymnastics team is predicted to qualify for the NCAA Super Six for a record 18th time according to the preseason coaches' poll released today. Utah, the only school to make the Super Six every year since 2000 and 17 times total in the 19-year history of team finals, is projected to finish fifth this season.
The Utes have made a record 36-consecutive national championship appearances--most recently placing fifth at the 2011 NCAA Championships--and are one of four Pac-12 schools in the 2012 preseason top eight.
UCLA, the NCAA runner-up a year ago, is picked to win the championship, followed by defending champ Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Utah and Nebraska. Rounding out the preseason top 12 are Oregon State, Stanford, Georgia, Michigan, Arkansas and LSU. Two other Pac-12 schools made the top 20 (Washington at No. 16 and Arizona at No. 19), while Arizona State and California both received votes.
The Utes, who will host the annual Red Rocks Preview on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., open their regular season at No. 1 ranked UCLA on Jan. 8. Utah's first home meet is against Utah State on Jan. 13. Utah has already sold nearly 6,000 season tickets and good seats are still available at UtahUtes.com and by calling 801-581-UTIX. The Red Rocks Preview is free.
The Utes will compete against seven preseason top 20 team in dual meets and another two at the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City on Mar. 24. The Utes have pre-sold 4,000 tickets to the Pac-12 Championships. Highlighting Utah's regular season home schedule are meets against No. 9 Georgia on Feb. 3, No. 8 Stanford on Feb. 24, No. 7 Oregon State on Mar. 2 and No. 6 Nebraska on Mar. 9. The Utes will also host in-state foe Brigham Young on Jan. 27.
In addition to the Pac-12 Championships, which will be televised on Fox Sports, Utah will host the 2012 NCAA Salt Lake Regional on Apr. 7.
On the road, Utah will meet No. 10 Michigan, No. 3 Florida and Arizona State.
