This Week
After a long absence from competition, the Utah Swimming and Diving team will hit the pool this weekend at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The Utes will see four other schools in Ann Barshop Natatorium, including Southern Methodist University, TCU, Missouri State, Rice and Incarnate Word.
Last Time Out
On Nov. 12 in Denver, the Ute women's squad topped the Colorado School of Mines 192-50, but fell short of Denver, 99.50-142.50. The Utah men beat Seattle University 151-83, but were also bested by Denver 133.50-96.50.
At the Wildcat Diving Invitational Nov. 18-20, the Utes finished strong. Competeing against the top divers in the nations, the Utes managed top-10 finishes by three different divers. Nelson Foo finished fourth in men's platform, while Brandon Stopplemoor scored a lifetime best 243.3 to take 10th. Ellis Walters came out with seventh place in the 1-meter while Foo did the same in the 3-meter.
Scouting the Opposition
Incarnate Word
In the CSCAA Division II Poll released Nov. 10, the Incarnate Word men's and women's teams both came out ranked in the top three. The men sit in the number two slot as the women are ranked third. After three years as a part of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, both teams have claimed the league title every year.
Southern Methodist University
Last week, three Mustangs set national swim records at the AT&T Swimming Winter National Championships. Nina Ragalova set a Bulgarian record in the 100 free (55.54), while Isabella Arcila set the 200 back (2:00.02) for her native Columbia. A Bermuda national record was set by Julian Fletcher in the 100 breast (1:03.97).
TCU
Ashley Bolin stands as the current Horned Frog record holder in three events, including the 200 free, 200 IM, and 400 IM. Also with three records, Sabine Rasch holds the 50 free, 100 free and the 100 fly.
On the men's side, Edgar Crespo and Laszio Gyurko are at the top of the pack with both competing in the NCAA Championships last season. Crespo placed 14th in the 100 breast and Gyurko took home 31st in the 100 back.
Upcoming Events
The Utes will bring in the New Year at Ute Natatorium on Jan. 7 where they will face Arizona State at 1 p.m.
