Four gymnasts headed to the University of Utah placed in the top 10 at the Junior Olympic National Championships last weekend in Long Beach, California. The group was led by Georgia Dabritz, who tied for first place in the all-around. Dabritz also won the gold on the uneven bars and floor exercise, and the Newburyport, Mass., native placed second on vault.
The J.O. Championships features eight divisions, which are determined by age and birth date, and although all four Utes will be entering school next fall as freshmen, Dabritz was the only one competing in the Senior D division. Kailah Delaney and Kassandra Lopez went head-to-head in the Senior C division, while Tory Wilson (who will graduate from high school a year ahead of her class this spring) competed in the Senior B division.
Dabritz and Wilson, who tied for fourth in the all-around in her division, qualified for the J.O. National Team based on their all-around finishes. Delaney missed making J.O. National Team by one place with her fifth-place all-around finish, while Lopez placed 10th all-around in the Senior C division. Delaney and Lopez also tied for third on the balance beam and Delaney took third on vault.
"The University of Utah had a great showing at the Junior Olympic Championships," said Utah coach Greg Marsden. "We are thrilled with the results of our incoming freshmen. They turned a lot of heads at the meet with their exceptional performances and will be entering collegiate gymnastics on a real high note. Their club coaches have done an incredible job. We're very excited to get these four and our other freshman, Becky Tutka, on campus. Georgia, Kailah, Kassandra and Becky will be here at the end of June to take part in our Bridge program and Tory will arrive in August for Fall semester."
