SALT LAKE CITY--
Before a cheering lunchtime throng of around 2,000 supporters, the University of Utah was formally welcomed into the Pac-12 Conference on Utah Pac-12 Day at the Utah State Capitol.
Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott was greeted enthusiastically and often as he introduced Utah as the newest member of the Pac-12 Conference and spoke of the U.'s athletic and academic excellence. Scott, with his wife and three children watching from the front row, was among seven speakers.
Also receiving multiple rounds of applause were Utah Athletics Director Chris Hill, University of Utah Interim President Lorris Betz, ASUU Student Body President Neela Pack, Congressman Jim Matheson, Senator Orrin Hatch and Lt. Gov. Greg Bell. Bell, wearing a Utah hat and other Ute insignia, concluded the program by declaring July 1, 2011 as Utah Pac-12 day.
With the induction of Utah and Colorado into the Conference of Champions, the Pac-10 has now officially become the Pac-12 Conference. The league's expansion is its first since 1978 and Utah and CU join Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State in the newly-minted Pac-12 Conference.
