WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
The Utah gymnastics team was picked to place second in the 2013 Pac-12 regular season race in a polling of the league's eight gymnastics coaches, the conference office announced today. The Utes, the nation's preseason No. 5-ranked team, were edged by two points in the Pac-12 poll, 46-44, to defending conference champion and preseason No. 2-ranked UCLA. Both teams received four first-place votes.
The preseason voting reflected how the two national powers fared at last year's Pac-12 Championships when UCLA edged Utah by five-hundredths of a point to claim the title.
Rounding out the top four in the preseason poll were No. 6 Stanford (38 points) and No. 9 Oregon State (31 points).
Utah and UCLA will square off on January 12 (Utah's season opener) in Los Angeles in a nationally televised meet on the Pac-12 Networks--the first gymnastics meet for the network.
