SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's track and field team will stay close to home this week as it prepares to compete at the Wildcat Indoor Open. The Utes will get underway on Thursday beginning with the throwing events at 2 p.m., at the Golden Spike Arena in Ogden, Utah.
"This is the type of meet where the speed and power-based athletes are mostly focused on proper technique and rhythm," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Certainly, we would like to win any event that we can, however, keeping or improving our technique and rhythm is most critical. Some of our younger and emerging athletes will get their final opportunity to compete during the indoor season before transitioning outdoors."
After matching her lifetime-best performance at the Husky Invitational on Feb. 11, junior Klaudia Rokossa enters this week's competition determined to beat that mark of 12-10.25.
Senior Brianna LeRoy is also slated to compete this Saturday in several events. The Wildcat Indoor Open will provide one final opportunity for LeRoy to fine tune before competing at the MPSF Championships on Feb. 23.
The Utes are set to have all their throwing athletes compete this weekend. Juniors' Anneli Stahl and Cynthia Sanchez will lead the charge in the weight throw. Junior Nikkie Rudder looks to improve on her career-best shot put performance that she had while competing at the Mountain States Games two weeks ago.
"We have several athletes who need to continue to improve both physically and mentally this week," Kepler said. "For some, that means getting off to a better start in their event. For others, it is maintaining good focus regardless of what is happening within the confines of the competition or race."
