PARK CITY, Utah - Utah golf currently sits in a tie for fourth after shooting an even-par second round, the best score of any team on the first day of the Utah Invitational.
"Our guys competed today and with a good second round, we're in a position to win the tournament tomorrow," head coach Randall McCracken said. "Despite the first round not going like we planned, we're definitely in the hunt with the way we played this afternoon."
The Utes trail leaders Utah State by six strokes heading into the final round of action. UTEP and Northern Colorado are tied for second place at nine-over and Utah is tied with Boise State at 10-over.
Sophomore Jonathon Thomas is at five-under through two rounds and is tied for the individual lead with Frederik Dreier of UTEP and Ty Travis of Boise State. Benjamin Bankhead is also in the top 10 after shooting two-under par over two rounds.
"Jonathon is really playing some great golf right now and has put himself in a spot to capture his first collegiate title," McCracken added. "He had a solid day and I thought Benjamin closed out with a strong performance that really helped our team score. I'm excited to see how the team plays tomorrow."
Casey Halliday was one-under in the second round to move into a tie for 24th while Daniel Engle recorded consecutive 73's for the Utes. Brent Pollock and Jack Maerki each improved by two and three strokes respectively during their second rounds.
"This is the first time we've ever hosted a tournament and we would like to thank everyone here giving us the opportunity to play at such a beautiful course," McCracken added. "I feel the course held its own today with the scores we saw being put on the board. This is such a great environment and we are so excited to have our tournament here the next three years."
Third-round play begins tomorrow with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
