SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah track and field team opens the 2014 season in Provo, Utah on Jan. 11 at the BYU Invitational.
Head coach Kyle Kepler is looking to see where his athletes are at as they prepare for the upcoming season.
"We plan to use the meet to find a baseline for our athletes, particularly in the technical events - sprints, jumps, throws," Kepler said. " We want to see where we stack up against the competition. In those events we really need to find out where our athletes are so we can address their workouts appropriately. We want to make those adjustments so we can move forward in the coming weeks. One of the more unsettling things for any athlete is to not know exactly where they are at, and this will give them an idea. We'll compare to where they were a year ago at this time.
"Our kids are biting at the bit to compete against anyone. At this point they have trained all fall long and just want to get going. For some of the freshmen it's their first-ever indoor competition, and it will be about getting their feet wet and understanding the flow of a college meet. There are some who are trying to perform to get on the travel roster. This will help us as coaches see what we have so we can set up our team for future meets."
Losing 11 seniors, including five-time All-American Amanda Mergaert, the Utes will be looking for their underclassmen to play a significant role in the upcoming season. Despite the youth in most positions, the team will be aided by the return of seniors Stephanie Jolley and Alyssa Johnson in the sprinting events. Furthermore the throwers will be bolstered by the return of junior Aoife Hickey. The distance group will be strengthened by the addition of junior Rebekah Winterton, who took much of 2013 off due to injury.
Additional returning athletes include Savannah Hurst (10-km), Andrea Chavez (800), Rosalie Waller (800), Theresa Waybright (pole vault), and Nikkie Rudder (hammer throw, shot put, discus).
