University of Utah at the Olympics
SOCHI, Russia - Former Utah skiers Torin Koos (cross country) and Annelies Cook (biathlon) are preparing for the start of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. The Olympics run from Feb. 7-23.
Koos, who has won six U.S. sprint titles, is competing in his fourth Olympics (2002, '06, '10). He was a three-time All-America skier at Utah. He finished seventh in the classic at the 2001 NCAA Championships while placing fourth in the classic race in 2002 with a sixth-place run in the freestyle race. He also ran track and cross country for the Utes. Koos graduated from Utah in 2004 with a degree in communications.
Cook, who will be competing in her first Olympics, earned All-America honors as a senior with a ninth-place finish in the 15-km freestyle. She was a three-time NCAA qualifier for the Utes. Cook has been a member of the U.S. biathlon team since 2009 and is in her third season on the World Cup circuit. She graduated from Utah in 2009 with a degree in international studies.
Also in Sochi is former three-time Utah All-American Scott Veenis, who is a U.S. Ski Team assistant alpine speed coach (downhill, super G). Veenis was the 2006 giant slalom NCAA champion. He graduated from Utah in 2010 with a degree in international studies.
