SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's cross country team is gearing up to get the 2014 season underway this Saturday at the Nature's Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic. The Utes are set to compete at Shadow Mountain Park in Reno, Nevada beginning at 8:30 p.m PST.
"It is going to be a unique race," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We don't have many cross country races under the lights and this course shouldn't be overly tough. It is primarily grass with some rocky, dirt-trail like area and is only a 4,000-meter race, instead of our traditional 6k distance."
Slated to compete for the Utes will be returning athletes Andrea Chavez, Makenzie Clark, Lauren Mills, Niki Rietz, Jessica Sams and Dana Snell. Also set to run and make their collegiate debuts will be freshmen Shaylen Crook, Dakota Grossman and Sadie Wassum.
"We will not be running all of our top runners," Kepler said. "We will have a few freshmen competing and a few other kids that we feel are on the verge of some breakthroughs. We want to get these athletes started early so we can figure out where they are at and what we should do with their training down the road. So far I feel really good about where the team is at. We are going to focus on what we do Saturday, and try not to worry about anyone else."
