SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women’s cross country hits the road this weekend to compete at the 6,000 meter Washington Invitational. The race will take place at the Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle and is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. PT.
“Our schedule is really starting to wind up,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “This will be our first time competing in Seattle on a cross country course, and we are definitely excited. Our biggest challenge for this week will be running an extra three-quarters of a mile, as we transition to running a 6k for the rest of the year. This transition is always a new challenge, but our kids handled moving from 4k to three miles pretty well so we will see if we can do it again one more time.”
Fresh off a first place finish at the Montana State Invitational, freshman Sarah Feeny has her eye set on leading the team once again in Washington. Feeny, an Ogden native, captured the three-mile event title in her collegiate debut and will try to continue that success while establishing herself as one of the top scoring team runners.
Accompanying Feeny at the head of the pack will be senior Rebekah Winterton. At the Montana State Invitational, Winterton made her season debut with an impressive sixth-place performance. Nikki Rietz and Jessica Sams are also runners to watch on Saturday. Rietz has established herself as one of the top runners for the Utes, finishing in the top 10 in every meet she has competed in this season. Sams is coming off an eighth-place performance at the Montana State Invitational.
This race will feature some of the premiere athletes in the nation and will be a chance for the Utes to see how they compare to other teams in the Pac-12 Conference. There are 12 teams slated to compete including: Stanford, UCLA, Oregon, Portland, Oklahoma, and Washington.
