SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah cross country team recently spent an afternoon at Hill Air Force Base, taking a tour of the facility and discussing similarities between team sports and routines in the military.
"They turned an afternoon of fall break into a great team educational event," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "It was a terrific opportunity for our kids to better understand what happens for the freedom that we are provided. They really enjoyed it. We were up in the traffic control tower, we were in flight simulators flying jets all over the valley, they were teaching us the land and we were bombing ships out in the Great Salt Lake. I think our group as a whole really learned a lot. We finished up the day right on the flight line watching brand new F-35s takeoff and we got to stand on the wing of an F-16. We are very grateful for them letting us come up and do that, and for their hospitality. You could not have asked for a nicer group of people who were very knowledgeable and eager to share that knowledge with us and help us understand what goes on.
"To see a setup like that and how smoothly it runs helps our kids understand where structure and routine are important to a team. They asked our kids some questions and were interested in what we were doing, and how we are doing and why we have been successful. It was a hodge podge of lesson and life learning, but I think it all came together nicely. It was just a really enjoyable afternoon. For the things that we got to see and do, it was really interesting, fun, exciting and I know our team was really thankful for that opportunity."
The 19th-ranked Utes compete at the Pac-12 Championships on Friday, Oct. 30.
