SALT LAKE CITY- The 19th-ranked Utah women's cross country team will head west this weekend to compete at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Colfax, Wash. The Utes will compete in the six-kilometer race located at the Colfax Golf Club beginning at 11:35 a.m. PT.
"We are heading into this meet ranked for the first time ever," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We have a lot to live up to there and I think it is going to be a battle to place in the top six. The top half of the league is very good, as it always is, but I think we belong and on the right day we can finish in that top-four range. We will be shooting for that top-four finish, but I know that the fourth-fifth-sixth spots are up for grabs. We have to have everyone run as well, and probably a little bit better than they did at Pre-Nats to slide up into that fourth position."
"This meet will feature several All-Americans," Kepler continued. "The top four teams ahead of us are all ranked in the top 12 in the country. We know what we are up against, but we also have a lot of confidence in what we are doing and how we are running right now. Our training has been terrific, so we are certainly going to go in there and give a great effort. That is what I expect and what I know our kids will do."
Hosted by Washington State University, the Pac-12 Championship will have five nationally ranked teams going head-to-head. Slated to compete on Friday will be third-ranked Colorado, fifth-ranked Oregon, tenth-ranked Stanford, 12th-ranked Washington and the 19th-ranked Utes. Utah's best finish at the Pac-12 Championships was seventh in 2012.
Leading the way for Utah will be the sophomore tandem of Sarah Feeny and Hannah McInturff, who have finished in the top 10 in both races they have competed in this season. Feeny finished 44th at the Pac-12 meet as a freshman last season while McInturff was 61st.
Other key competitors for Utah to keep an eye out for on Friday include Susannah Hurst Spencer, Jessica Sams, Andrea Chavez and Shaylen Crook.
