SALT LAKE CITY-
The Utah gymnastics team was picked fourth in the preseason coaches' poll released today. Oklahoma, Florida and Alabama captured the most votes, while Utah, LSU and UCLA rounded out the top six. The 2015 NCAA runner-up Utes collected the third-most first-place votes with 14 and their 2,171 total votes was just three shy of third place.
"We feel good about our preseason national ranking," said first-year co-head coach Tom Farden. "We lost possibly the best senior class in the nation, so this ranking shows that the coaches respect not only our returners, but also our freshman class of recruits."
Highlighting the returners are All-Americans Kari Lee, who competed in the NCAA individual finals on vault and floor last year as a freshman, Kailah Delaney, Breanna Hughes, Kassandra Lopez and Samantha Partyka. Freshmen who could make an early impact nationally are Sabrina Schwab and MaKenna Merrell.
The Utes will face eight preseason top-25 teams in the regular season: No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Stanford, No. 9 Georgia, No. 12 Oregon State, No. 14 California, No. 18 Arizona and No. 24 Southern Utah.
Utah opens its 2016 season at home against BYU on Jan. 8. The NCAA Regional Championship returns to the Huntsman Center for the first time in four years on Apr. 2.
